4 - Pacific Sceneries

PTSA - Kosrae, Micronesia

Kosrae, ever heard of that, or Pohnpei, Chuuk, Yap, Kwajalein..?

Neither had I before I got in my computer the sceneries of those isolated and beautiful islands in the Pacific by Derek and Brendan Webb. The islands are scattered at seemingly appropriate one and a half hour to two hours flying distance apart along the Micronesian range where the tips are a series of paradise islands.

It wasn't always a paradise. These islands were used by the U.S. as stepping stones to get closer to and conquer Japan in WW2. The remnants of airfields built by the U.S. for their bomb planes are still there as are relics of tanks and bulwarks. Some of these artifacts are there in the sceneries.

I've chosen Kosrae as it is so beautiful. Here I want to go for real.

We take off from the reef runway at PHNL; 8R and make a right turn straight after take off and climb along Waikiki Beach before turning southward to Kosrae. The flightpath takes us over the Johnston atoll, a now abandoned small island which used to be a military air station and a nuclear test site (it does have a long runway now marked X (closed). We also fly over the Majuro atoll before heading straight to Kosrae, not much traffic here.

This part of the world is not included in the FS9 weather report system, so there is always FS9's default weather and you select whichever runway you want. So we make a straight in approach to rwy 23 at Kosrae's reef runway. This is paradise and we shack up in a small but comfortable cottage on the beach for a couple of nights.

Airline traffic is sparse to say the least; a couple of west and east bound flights a week by Continental Micronesia doing some Micronesian island hopping between Guam and Honolulu.

Check out the Gallery from one of these flights (The Jonhnston atoll was still inhabited then).

NFFN - Nadi, Fiji

Early morning, take off from Kosrae for a three hour plus flight to Fiji islands. Nice weather and landing at Nadi international airport, a Bill Melichar work. Lots of colors; flowers, trees...

Traffic is dominated by Fiji's airline Air Pacific which has come a long way since its few HS748s and the single BAC 111 in the seventies. Air New Zealand and Air Caledonie flies here and Virgin's Pacific Blue connect to New Zealand and Australia.

NZWN - Wellington, New Zealand

The airport at Wellington is situated on a patch of low land between high terrain Wellington and a small peninsula to the east of the city. It makes for some exciting wind conditions and it's always interesting to land here. Today we get rwy 34 so we make a left circuit to approach to the north. No problem and we settle down at our half way point around the world, no 18 of the planned 35 legs.

This scenery and the city of Wellington is created by Ian Warren, Jon Murchison, James Eden and Robin Corn as a framerate friendly alternative to payware New Zealand Scenery for FS2004. And it's really nice. It's beautiful to land from the north with the city on your right.

Traffic is Air New Zealand, Air New Zealand, Air New Zealand and Qantas, Freedom air and Pacific Blue. Check out the airport's excitingly designed web page.

YBCS - Cairns, Australia

After crossing the Tasman sea we make a northern approach to Cairns on the northern Australian east coast. This is a nice scenery, nothing fancy, just a clean, robust FS2004 airport created by Daryl Fisher.

Traffic at Cairns is Qantas, obviously, Virgin Blue and JetStar as well as a couple of international airlines connecting Cairns with the Pacific and South East Asia.
