A little information about Umeå

Umea is situtated in northern Sweden. More than 100 000 inhabitants live here. The population is growing as this is a regional center in the northern part of the country. Biggest employers are the County, Community, University and Volvo.

Umea is known as the City of Birches which is easy to understand when you come here, birch trees all along all streets in the city. They were planted after the devastating fire in 1888. Broader streets with Birch trees were built for better fire protection.

The houses in Umea are mostly two-tree stories high built of wood, with the occasional stone or brick house in the city center. One example is the Scandic Plaza hotel.

The Ume river flows through Umea dividing the city in one northern and one southern side. The main part of the city is on the northern side with Volvo, the ice rink and the airport on the southern.

Umea is a nice biking city with dedicated bike routes all over. There are several theaters and the Northern Opera, a lot of restaturants and pubs and an extensive bus route network, both locally and regionally.
